Science - Reusable or Waste

One of the first lessons in science (Grade 5) is recognizing whether a material is reusable or waste. It is important because it teaches the students to identify items in their households that they can still use or should be disposed off. 

In the Philippines, households do not normally segregate their trash so finding a place for these garbage has become a huge problem. If every household learned to reuse or recycle material, then there would be a substantial reduction in the amount of garbage produced.

Reading 4 - Identifying the Setting of the Story

One way to better understand a story is to identify the setting. This pertains to the "where" and "when" of the story that one is reading. Most of the time, the setting is already written in the text. If the setting is not explicitly mentioned, the reader needs to search for the keywords that will help them identify it.

English - Identifying Root Words and Using Affixes

A dictionary sure is helpful in finding out the meaning of words that we do not know. However, it is not something that we have on hand all of the time. To be able to at least guess the meaning of a new  word, it is very helpful to know how to identify root words and the meaning of common affixes.

Root words are also known as base words. We attach extra letters known as affixes to modify its meaning. We put the prefix before the root word. We attach a suffix at the end of the root word.

Here are some common prefixes and their meanings:

reread – to read again
replay- to play again

not; opposite of
unclean – not clean
unpleasant – opposite of pleasant
unbreakable – not breakable
dis-
no or not
(it is usually used for adjectives)

(used before words beginning with m or p)
improper – not proper
impatient – not patient
immature – not mature
in-
no or not; without
incorrect – not correct

Filipino - Pagbibigay ng Pamagat

Ang pamagat (title) ng isang akda o larawan ay nagpapahayag ng diwa o paksa nito. 

Mahalagang tandaan na sa pagbibigay ng pamagat, mabuting gawin itong maikli at nakatatawag ng pansin. Ito ay kalimitang humihikayat sa mambabasa na ituloy ang pagbabasa sa akda.

Kailangang simulan sa malaking titik ang mahahalagang salita sa pamagat.

Tingnan natin ang halimbawang ito:


          Ang pating ay isang uri ng karniborong isda. Sa kasalukuyan, mayroong mahigit na limandaang uri ng pating. Karamihan ng uri ng pating ay nananatili sa tubig-dagat ngunit may iilang nabubuhay sa tubig tabang. Ang pinakamaliit na pating ay may habang anim na pulgada. Ang pinakamahaba naman ay ang butanding. Ito ay umaabot sa haba na labindalawang metro.

Ano ang maaari nating ibigay na pamagat dito?

a. Ang Nakakatakot na Isda
b. Ang Iba't Ibang Uri ng Pating
c. Ang Pating

Para sa akdang ito, ang pinaka-angkop na pamagat ay "Ang Pating". 


Tingnan naman natin itong isang maikling kuwento:

          Sabik na sabik si Julia na pumasok sa paaralan ngayong araw na ito. Kagabi pa lamang ay inihanda na niya ang kanyang uniporme. Naka-ayos na rin ang kanyang bag at baunan. Pagtunog ng kanyang relo, mabilis na bumangon si Julia upang maligo na. Dali-dali siyang nagbihis at pumunta sa silid-kainan. "Julia, mukhang handa ka na para sa unang araw ng pasukan," ang bati ng kanyang nanay. "Opo! Sabik na po akong pumasok!" ang sagot ng bata.

Ano kaya ang magandang pamagat para sa kuwentong ito?

a. Ang Unang Araw ng Pasukan
b. Sabik nang Pumasok si Julia
c. Ang Paaralan ni Julia
