Cell Parts and Functions UPCAT Reviewer: Lesson and Practice
Cell Structure and Function
Recognize each organelle by what it does—not only by how it looks.

A cell works through specialized structures

Instead of memorizing a disconnected list, connect every structure to a job and then predict what happens when that job fails.
Stores DNA and controls cell activities.
Releases usable energy through cellular respiration.
Builds proteins.
Processes and transports proteins.
Modifies, sorts, and packages cell products.
Regulates what enters and leaves.
Captures light energy for photosynthesis.
Stores water and supports plant-cell rigidity.
Provides rigid support and protection.
Shared structures
Both plant and animal cells have a membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, ER, and Golgi apparatus.
Plant identifiers
A cell wall, chloroplasts, and a dominant central vacuole strongly indicate a plant cell.
Structure → job → consequence
Why it works
UPCAT-style items often describe a function or malfunction instead of simply asking for an organelle name.
Five forms you should recognize
Ribosomes assemble amino acids; rough ER processes many proteins; Golgi modifies and packages them.
Muscle cells contain many mitochondria because they require abundant ATP.
Water leaves the central vacuole, turgor pressure falls, and plant tissue becomes less rigid.
The membrane allows some substances to cross more readily than others.
Chloroplasts capture light energy to help form glucose.
Check before you commit
- Calling mitochondria the source of energy rather than the site that converts energy
- Confusing cell wall with cell membrane
- Giving animal cells chloroplasts
- Saying ribosomes store DNA
- Treating the vacuole as empty
- Memorizing shape without function
Do you need the lesson-or just practice?
One original question in each form recommends your next step. It does not yet verify mastery.
Work at the level you need.
Foundations
Build the core procedure with immediate explanations.
Core Practice
Use mixed forms with less scaffolding.
UPCAT-Style Transfer
Apply the competency in unfamiliar representations.
Ready to verify this competency?
A score of 5/5 verifies mastery. An unsuccessful attempt loads a different five-form bank.
Cell Structure and Function FAQ
Do plant cells also have mitochondria?
Yes. Plant cells perform cellular respiration as well as photosynthesis.
Is the cell wall the outer boundary controlling entry?
The cell wall supports the cell, while the cell membrane regulates movement.
