A modifier must point clearly to the right word
A modifier adds description. If it is too far from its target—or if the target is missing—the sentence may become illogical. After an introductory phrase, name its doer immediately.
Placement test
Move the modifier beside the word it describes.
Opening phrase
The noun after the comma should perform the opening action.
Ask: Who is doing the opening action?
Problem: “Walking through the market, the lanterns caught my attention.”
Recognize: The sentence accidentally says the lanterns were walking.
Do it fast: Name the walker after the comma: Walking through the market, I noticed the lanterns.
Why it works
The subject immediately after an opening modifier is understood to perform that modifier’s action.
Five forms you should recognize
Clear: After reviewing the figures, Mara approved the budget.
Problem: After reviewing the figures, the budget was approved by Mara.
Clear: Jules answered only three questions.
Problem: Only Jules answered three questions.
Clear: Covered in mud, the hikers removed their boots.
Problem: Covered in mud, the boots were removed by the hikers.
Clear: Students who practice regularly usually improve.
Problem: Students who practice usually regularly improve.
Clear: The teacher handed worksheets to the students printed on blue paper.
Problem: The teacher handed the students worksheets printed on blue paper.
Check before you commit
- Letting an object perform the opening action
- Placing only beside the wrong word
- Separating a relative clause from its noun
- Assuming a grammatically complete sentence is logically clear
- Ignoring unintended humor
- Moving a modifier without checking meaning
