The focus is the underground point where rupture begins. The epicenter is the point on Earth’s surface directly above it.

The focus is where rupture begins underground; the epicenter is the surface point directly above it. Fast P waves arrive before S waves. The growing P–S arrival gap helps estimate distance from a station to the epicenter.

Locate with evidence

One station gives distance, not direction. Three station-distance circles can identify a common epicenter.

Damage is not magnitude alone

Depth, distance, soil, construction, exposure, and vulnerability all affect consequences.

Problem: Station A has a larger S–P interval than Station B.

Recognize: P waves pull farther ahead of slower S waves over a longer trip.

Do it fast: Station A is farther from the epicenter.

Why it works

This turns a seismogram observation into a distance conclusion without confusing arrival time, magnitude, or intensity.
