Cause and effect is more than spotting “because”
A cause helps produce an outcome; an effect is the resulting change. UPCAT-style passages may hide the relationship inside a mechanism, a chain of events, several contributing factors, a preventive action, or a claim that mistakes correlation for causation.
What condition or action began the change?
Through what process did it operate?
What happened as a result?
Does the evidence prove cause—or only association?
Trace the links
In a chain such as runoff → algal bloom → oxygen loss → fish deaths, the first cause and the immediate cause are not the same.
Match the strength
“May contribute to” is weaker than “causes,” while “guarantees” and “always” require very strong evidence.
Change → mechanism → result
Write a three-part arrow:
What changed → How it operated → What resulted
Then test the wording: Is the passage reporting a cause, proposing a possible cause, stating a purpose, or merely showing that two things occurred together?
Why it works
This keeps you from reversing cause and effect, skipping an intermediate step, or accepting a causal claim that the evidence does not establish.
Five forms you should recognize
The pipe burst, reducing water pressure; classes were suspended.Cause: Loss of water pressure.
Effect: Class suspension.
Earlier cause: The burst pipe.
Runoff added nutrients, algae multiplied, oxygen fell, and fish died.Chain: Runoff → nutrients → algal bloom → oxygen loss → fish deaths.
Immediate cause of death: Low oxygen.
The harvest fell after pests damaged seedlings and wind broke mature stalks.Structure: Two contributing causes → one effect.
The city staggered work hours to reduce crowding.Purpose: Reduce crowding.
Not yet proven: That crowding actually fell.
Students who borrowed more books had higher scores.Known: The variables are associated.
Unknown: Whether borrowing caused the scores, the direction is reversed, or another factor influenced both.
Check before you commit
- Reversing the cause and effect
- Skipping the mechanism in a causal chain
- Treating the earliest cause as the immediate cause
- Assuming “after” means “because of”
- Treating an intended effect as a proven result
- Accepting absolute causal language from limited evidence

Cause and Effect FAQ
Does “because” always prove causation?
It signals that the writer is making a causal claim. You must still judge whether the evidence supports that claim.
Can one effect have several causes?
Yes. Most real outcomes have multiple contributing factors, and a passage may emphasize only some of them.
What is the difference between correlation and causation?
Correlation means variables change together. Causation means a change in one helps produce a change in the other through a defensible process.
