QUICK REVIEW

Connectors do more than join words—they tell readers how ideas relate

Before choosing a conjunction or transition, name the relationship: addition, contrast, cause, result, condition, concession, example, or sequence. Words that sound formal are not interchangeable.

Name the relationship

Ask whether the second idea supports, opposes, explains, or results from the first.

Check the grammar

A conjunction may introduce a clause, while a transition such as however needs appropriate punctuation.

DO IT FAST

Cover the blank and predict the relationship

“The treatment reduced symptoms; _____, it did not cure the infection.” The second idea limits the first, so predict contrast. The best connector is however.

Why it works

Predicting the relationship prevents choosing a connector merely because it sounds polished.
