Purpose is an action directed toward an effect
The author’s overall purpose is the main effect the entire passage seeks to create: explain, argue, warn, portray, evaluate, reflect, or instruct. The function of a detail is its local job inside that larger purpose.

Use a precise verb
“To explain how…” is more useful than the vague phrase “to inform.”
Separate whole from part
A statistic may provide evidence even when the passage’s overall purpose is to persuade.
Verb + specific content + intended effect
Why it works
This formula prevents broad answers such as “to inform” from beating a more accurate description of the whole text.
Five forms you should recognize
Dark roof surfaces absorb more solar energy than pale surfaces. Reflective coatings can therefore reduce the heat entering a building.Purpose: To explain how roof color affects heat absorption.
Clue: The passage presents a cause-and-effect mechanism.
The town needs parking, but removing every roadside tree would increase heat and reduce walkability. It should study solutions that preserve shade.Purpose: To argue for solving parking needs without removing all trees.
Clue: The author takes a position and supports it with reasons.
Ana folded the acceptance letter and placed it beneath her mother’s photograph. “We did it,” she whispered.Purpose: To portray Ana’s achievement as connected to her mother.
Clue: Symbolic action reveals emotion; the text does not explain a procedure.
A clear photograph may still have an old date or false caption. Verify its source before sharing it.Purpose: To warn readers against trusting and sharing images without verification.
The article argues that the river is recovering. It notes that three native fish species returned this year.Overall purpose: To argue that the river is recovering.
Function of the fish detail: To provide concrete evidence for the claim.
Check before you commit
- Choosing “to inform” because the passage contains facts
- Naming the topic instead of the purpose
- Describing one example instead of the whole text
- Confusing the reader’s reaction with the author’s intention
- Assuming every story exists only to entertain
- Ignoring qualifying words that limit an argument
