A cladogram is a branching hypothesis—not a ladder of progress
Trace both branches backward. The first node where they meet is their most recent common ancestor.
A derived character placed on a branch belongs to the descendants above that mark unless later evidence shows a loss or reversal.
Rotating branches around a node or moving tips left and right does not change relationships. Only the branching connections matter.
Sister taxa share an immediate node
They are each other’s closest displayed relatives, though neither is necessarily the direct ancestor of the other.
A clade includes everyone
Choose one ancestor and include all descendant lineages arising from it.
Tips → trace back → first shared node
Problem: Which is more closely related to A: B or C?
Step 1: Trace A and B backward until they meet.
Step 2: Trace A and C backward until they meet.
Do it fast: The pair that meets at the more recent node is more closely related. Do not measure how close the names look on the page.
Why it works
This method works even when branches are rotated, stretched, or arranged differently.
Five forms you should recognize
How to read it: Trace A and B backward. Their branches first meet at the red node. The node represents an ancestral population—not either modern species.
Conclusion: A and B are each other’s closest displayed relatives. Neither one must be the direct ancestor of the other.
How to read it: Fish branched away before trait X appeared. Frog and lizard descend from the branch carrying X, so both inherit it in the simplest interpretation.
Rule: Rotating branches around a node changes the appearance, not the ancestry. Compare connections, not left-to-right order.
Correct interpretation: All living lineages have continued evolving since their common ancestors. A cladogram ranks relationships, not intelligence, complexity, or worth.

Only if the tree provides a time or change scale. In a basic cladogram, branch length may be decorative.
Can branches be rotated?
Yes. Rotating around a node does not change the underlying relationships.
Are fossils allowed inside a cladogram?
Yes. Fossils can be placed using their derived characters and other evidence.
