Reliable spelling comes from word structure, visual memory, and careful proofreading
English spelling contains patterns but also many exceptions. Instead of relying only on sound, notice roots, suffixes, doubled consonants, and word families: recommend → recommendation, pronounce → pronunciation, and available → availability. MB-style questions may place one misspelled word among several unfamiliar but correctly spelled words.
Break the word into meaningful parts
Roots and suffixes make long words easier to inspect.
Separate spelling from usage
A word can be spelled correctly but used incorrectly, as with principal and principle.
Scan the dangerous parts instead of rereading the whole word
For accommodate, check the part most often lost: cc + mm. For occurrence, check cc + rr + ence. For definitely, remember that it comes from definite, not “definate.” Then reread the full word once.
Why it works
Most spelling distractors alter one predictable region, so targeted checking is faster than sounding out every letter.
Five forms you should recognize
acccommodate
recommend → recommendation
argue → argument, not arguement
pronounce → pronunciation
millennium has double l and double n
Check before you commit
- Trusting pronunciation alone
- Assuming every unfamiliar word is misspelled
- Missing doubled consonants
- Confusing spelling with word choice
- Overapplying “i before e”
- Ignoring changes when suffixes are added
Do you need the lesson-or just practice?
One original question in each form recommends your next step. It does not yet verify mastery.
Work at the level you need.
Foundations
Build the core procedure with immediate explanations.
Core Practice
Use mixed forms with less scaffolding.
UPCAT-Style Transfer
Apply the competency in unfamiliar representations.

A score of 5/5 verifies mastery. An unsuccessful attempt loads a different five-form bank.
Spelling FAQ
Are British and American spellings both acceptable?
A well-designed item should avoid making two accepted regional spellings compete. Our questions target forms with one clearly nonstandard option.
Should I memorize every difficult word?
Focus on common academic words, high-frequency traps, and word families, then practice proofreading in context.
