The main idea unites the important details
The topic tells what a passage discusses. The main idea tells what the author says about that topic. A good summary states that controlling idea and includes only essential support.
What is being discussed?
What does the whole passage say about it?
What evidence or example explains it?
What is the central idea without minor details?
Coverage test
The correct answer should account for most of the passage, not only one sentence.
Accuracy test
Reject choices that exaggerate, add advice, or change the author’s position.
Topic + controlling point
Why it works
This separates the subject from the author’s actual claim and exposes choices that mention the topic but miss the point.
Five forms you should recognize
“Mangrove roots trap soil” is only a detail if the passage also emphasizes habitats and shoreline stability.
“Nature is important” could fit thousands of passages and says too little.
A summary cannot recommend a policy the author never proposed.
Choose the title that reflects the controlling idea, not the most colorful example.
When no sentence states it directly, combine the repeated relationship among the important details.
Check before you commit
- Choosing the first sentence automatically
- Selecting a true but minor detail
- Choosing the broadest option
- Adding personal opinion
- Confusing the topic with the main idea
- Accepting an absolute claim unsupported by the passage
