The number #404 identified the delivery; it was not a mistake. From inside the enormous crate came a soft squeak. That was not wrong either—but it was a curious clue Ava should remember.
That Is Not a Tiny Dragon
A huge golden nose appeared. Then came two round eyes, two floppy-looking ears, and an dragon.
He looked at Ava—and immediately hid behind the delivery rider. Only half of him fit.
A pigeon fluttered down. The dragon gasped, knocked over three flour baskets, and squeaked.
“I ordered a small dragon,” Ava whispered.

“Ava! The oven stopped!”
Ava hurried to the window. Across the city, flying buses were slowly lowering themselves to the streets. Magical billboards blinked once and disappeared. Neighbors stepped onto their balconies holding useless phones.
All the magic in the neighborhood seemed to be gone.

Behind Ava, Biscuit began to glow. At first, the light was faint. Then every golden scale shone like a tiny lamp.
“Biscuit?”
The dragon stared toward the old clock tower at the end of the street. The whole city was dark—but the darkness around the tower looked deeper, as if even the moonlight could not reach it.
Ava squinted. She could not see anything unusual. Biscuit kept staring anyway. His ears lifted, and the golden light under his scales grew brighter.
Then he walked toward the door and waited for Ava.

Ava and Biscuit slipped out of the bakery. Without the floating blue stars, their street looked unfamiliar. Biscuit walked slowly so Ava could stay inside the circle of light cast by his golden scales.
At the stone bridge, Biscuit suddenly stopped. Something rustled beneath them. He squeaked and pressed against Ava—but he did not run home.
“You’re scared,” Ava whispered, “but you’re still leading me.”
They crossed together. Beside the silent fountain, Biscuit sniffed the air, turned down a narrow path, and led Ava into the garden behind the clock tower. The strange darkness was thickest there.

Then the enormous dragon lifted his head and gave the bravest, loudest sound he had ever made: “SQUEEEEEAK!”
Ava wrapped both arms around his neck. Biscuit had been afraid—but he had saved them all.
They climbed the tower stairs and followed the newly glowing streetlamps home. Grandma was waiting outside the bakery. The moment she saw them, she pulled Ava into a hug and wrapped both arms around as much of Biscuit as she could reach.
“You came home,” Grandma whispered. “And you brought the whole city’s magic back with you.”
Wrong Order—or Right Dragon?
The next morning, Ava, Grandma, and Biscuit ate warm bread in the bakery. Biscuit’s tail still blocked the kitchen door, but Grandma did not complain.
Then Ava’s tablet chimed. The Magical Pet Shop had heard about the mix-up. It offered to exchange Biscuit for the original small dragon Ava had ordered.
Biscuit was enormous. He could not fetch or roar. He feared cats, balls, balloons, and pigeons. But he was gentle, loyal, and brave when Ava needed him. His unusual light had saved the city.
