One of the many challenges of students nowadays, particularly in English-speaking households, is reading Filipino texts for school. Besides the struggle to decode the stories, students find it also difficult to understand what the text is about.
What can we do to help these pupils?
First, we need to talk to them in Filipino. Even if they can read them in books and hear them used in class, the children will not be able to retain the meaning of the words if they don't hear and use them often.
Next, help them read. And, make them read on a regular basis. Ever hear the old adage, "Practice makes perfect"? Well, it applies here too. The more often a child practices reading in Filipino, the faster he or she would improve this skill. The more familiar the Filipino words become, the better their comprehension will be. Help your child (student) read the selections and stop after every paragraph to check if they understood what was read. I would sometimes translate the story per sentence or per paragraph and point out words that the student may not know yet. Then, at the end of the story, ask comprehension questions to check for understanding.
Here are some short stories in Filipino. For the Grades 1-3 entries, I have chosen them particularly for the length and words used.
