Turned, flipped, or only moved?

Look at the asymmetric part of each figure first. Decide what happened before learning the formal name of the transformation.

Now name what you noticed

A rotation turns the whole figure while preserving its handedness. A reflection reverses the figure as a mirror would. A translation changes position without changing orientation. Harder items combine a reflection with a turn or run different transformations on alternating frames.

DO IT FAST

Use ANCHOR → HANDEDNESS → TURN → CHECK

  1. ANCHOR: Choose the flag, short arm, notch, arrowhead, or gold dot that makes the figure asymmetric.
  2. HANDEDNESS: Decide whether its left-right order is preserved. If it reverses, a reflection occurred.
  3. TURN: Measure the clockwise or counterclockwise angle only after checking for a flip.
  4. CHECK: Track shading and the gold marker separately; do not let them disguise the orientation rule.
Fast test: You cannot obtain a true mirror image merely by turning the paper. If the short arm changes sides, reflection is involved.
GUIDED TRY

Separate the main turn from the secondary changes

  1. Use the unequal arms of the L-shaped figure as the orientation anchor.
  2. The whole figure turns 90° clockwise at every step.
  3. The fill alternates white and dark.
  4. The gold marker advances to the next corner at the same time.
The correct choice must satisfy all three changes: another 90° clockwise turn, the next fill in the alternating cycle, and the marker in the next corner. A choice matching only the turn is incomplete.

What kind of change is happening?

Do not begin by memorising rule names. Look at each short series first. Notice what changes, what repeats, and what stays independent.

Now name what you noticed

A cycle returns to its starting form. A side-count progression adds or removes sides. Repeated pairs hold each state for two frames. Interleaved chains place one sequence in the odd positions and another in the even positions.

DO IT FAST

Use TRACK → SPLIT → SCHEDULE → VERIFY

  1. TRACK: Record outer shape, inner symbol, fill, marker, turn, and perimeter marks separately.
  2. SPLIT: Test odd and even positions when consecutive transitions conflict.
  3. SCHEDULE: Identify how often each feature changes: every frame, every second frame, or in a repeating cycle.
  4. VERIFY: Reject a choice if even one scheduled feature is wrong.

Check all features. The answer needs the next outer shape, alternating fill, next marker corner, and the unchanged inner symbol.

Now name what you noticed

Inventory: count objects, lines, regions, endpoints, and enclosed spaces.

A reliable grid formula
