A matrix is a visual equation
Each row or column follows a rule. The missing cell must complete every applicable rule at once.
Use ROW → COLUMN → OPERATOR → VERIFY
- ROW: compare the first complete row and describe what cell 3 does.
- COLUMN: test the same idea down a complete column.
- OPERATOR: decide whether features are added, cancelled, removed, moved, rotated, or distributed.
- VERIFY: check the candidate against both the incomplete row and incomplete column.
Begin with feature union
- In each row, cell 3 contains all line features from cells 1 and 2.
- The bottom row already has a vertical line and a horizontal line.
- Combine them without changing their positions.
- The answer is the cross containing both lines.
Hard matrices use two linked operations
A strong item may use cancellation for line features while shading follows a separate cycle. Track each feature family independently, then recombine them.

Should I always read from left to right?
No. Test rows first, then columns. Some questions work in both directions; others reveal the rule more clearly down columns.
What does cancellation mean?
When the same feature appears in both input cells, it disappears in the result. Features appearing only once remain.
How do I handle a complicated figure?
Separate it into feature channels—shape, line direction, position, count, and shading—then track each channel independently.
Why do two options seem correct?
One probably satisfies only a row or only one feature. Verify the column and every visual feature.
What should I do under time pressure?
Use the two simplest complete lines to identify the operator, eliminate options that violate it, and verify the survivor.
