Rotation, Reflection, and Orientation
Learn to distinguish a true turn from a mirror image, then solve multi-step orientation chains under ACET-style time pressure.
Turned, flipped, or only moved?
Look at the asymmetric part of each figure first. Decide what happened before learning the formal name of the transformation.
Now name what you noticed
A rotation turns the whole figure while preserving its handedness. A reflection reverses the figure as a mirror would. A translation changes position without changing orientation. Harder items combine a reflection with a turn or run different transformations on alternating frames.
Use ANCHOR → HANDEDNESS → TURN → CHECK
- ANCHOR: Choose the flag, short arm, notch, arrowhead, or gold dot that makes the figure asymmetric.
- HANDEDNESS: Decide whether its left-right order is preserved. If it reverses, a reflection occurred.
- TURN: Measure the clockwise or counterclockwise angle only after checking for a flip.
- CHECK: Track shading and the gold marker separately; do not let them disguise the orientation rule.
Separate the main turn from the secondary changes
- Use the unequal arms of the L-shaped figure as the orientation anchor.
- The whole figure turns 90° clockwise at every step.
- The fill alternates white and dark.
- The gold marker advances to the next corner at the same time.

How can I distinguish rotation from reflection quickly?
Track one asymmetric feature. Rotation preserves its clockwise order; reflection reverses its handedness.
Does a 180° turn look like a reflection?
Sometimes it appears similar, but handedness remains unchanged after rotation. Use a notch or unequal arm to test it.
What should I track first?
Check mirrored versus unmirrored orientation first, then measure the turn, and only afterward track shading or position markers.
When should I split odd and even positions?
Split them when consecutive turns look inconsistent but frames 1-3-5 and 2-4-6 each have a stable orientation rule.
Why do several choices look nearly correct?
ACET-style distractors commonly preserve the angle while changing handedness, or preserve the reflection while shifting a secondary marker.
