Shape Sequences
Solve interlocking sequences in which shape, number, position, shading, size, and rotation change on separate schedules.
What kind of change is happening?
Do not begin by memorising rule names. Look at each short series first. Notice what changes, what repeats, and what stays independent.
Now name what you noticed
A cycle returns to its starting form. A side-count progression adds or removes sides. Repeated pairs hold each state for two frames. Interleaved chains place one sequence in the odd positions and another in the even positions.
Use TRACK → SPLIT → SCHEDULE → VERIFY
- TRACK: Record outer shape, inner symbol, fill, marker, turn, and perimeter marks separately.
- SPLIT: Test odd and even positions when consecutive transitions conflict.
- SCHEDULE: Identify how often each feature changes: every frame, every second frame, or in a repeating cycle.
- VERIFY: Reject a choice if even one scheduled feature is wrong.
Begin with a controlled two-rule sequence
- The outer figure advances through the shape cycle.
- The fill alternates white and gray.
- The gold marker advances one corner per frame.
- The inner symbol stays fixed; it is an invariant.

Shape Sequences FAQ
Should a circle count as a zero-sided polygon?
Not unless the item clearly establishes that rule. Treat a circle as its own shape in ordinary cycles.
When should I split odd and even positions?
Use two chains when consecutive frames seem inconsistent but positions 1-3-5 and 2-4-6 each form a simple pattern.
Can a sequence repeat shapes in pairs?
Yes. Look for groupings such as A, A, B, B, C, C before assuming each frame changes.
What if two rules fit the last frames?
Test both rules against the entire sequence. The intended rule should explain every transition economically.
Does orientation matter here?
