A matrix is a visual equation

Each row or column follows a rule. The missing cell must complete every applicable rule at once.

Combine: figures may be added, overlaid, removed, or cancelled.
Transform: a shape may rotate, reflect, move, or change fill.
Distribute: each symbol, position, or shading may appear once per row and column.
Calculate: counts may add, subtract, alternate, or preserve a total.

  1. ROW: compare the first complete row and describe what cell 3 does.
  2. COLUMN: test the same idea down a complete column.
  3. OPERATOR: decide whether features are added, cancelled, removed, moved, rotated, or distributed.
  4. VERIFY: check the candidate against both the incomplete row and incomplete column.
ACET trap: a distractor often completes the last row but violates the last column.

  1. In each row, cell 3 contains all line features from cells 1 and 2.
  2. The bottom row already has a vertical line and a horizontal line.
  3. Combine them without changing their positions.
  4. The answer is the cross containing both lines.
Rule: cell 3 is the union of cells 1 and 2. The same relation also holds down the columns.

Hard matrices use two linked operations

A strong item may use cancellation for line features while shading follows a separate cycle. Track each feature family independently, then recombine them.

Trace lines separately: vertical, horizontal, and diagonal strokes can obey XOR or subtraction.
Trace markers separately: dots can move, alternate fill, or preserve a total.
Near match: one option may have the correct strokes but the wrong marker position.
Final check: the answer must satisfy the row rule and column rule simultaneously.

What does cancellation mean?

A figure is a bundle of features

Do not name a pattern after noticing only one change. Record each feature as if it were a separate moving part.

Count: objects, sides, marks, compartments
Place: corner, ring position, inside or outside
Direction: rotation, reflection, reversal
State: fill, size, line type, shape identity
The ACET trap: a wrong choice often continues the most obvious rule and quietly violates a second rule.
