How to take this test

Sixty questions in sixty minutes gives you about one minute per item. That does not mean every problem deserves a full minute.

  1. Do the short problems first. If you know the setup, solve it. If you are not sure how to begin, mark it and move.
  2. Write the setup before doing arithmetic. Identify what is given, what is asked, and the relationship between them.
  3. Estimate before trusting an answer. Check the sign, size, units, and whether the result makes sense.
  4. Use the choices when they save time. Backsolve, test values, or eliminate impossible answers when that is faster.
  5. Protect your time. One hard item should not cost you several easier ones.
  6. Keep scratch work readable. A clean equation or diagram is easier to check when you return.
Recall before you start: percent and ratio relationships; exponent and radical rules; slope and basic line equations; distance-rate-time; averages; common area, perimeter, circumference, and volume formulas; the Pythagorean theorem; basic probability; and rearranging equations.

These are general standardized-test strategies, not official Ateneo test instructions.
