QUICK REVIEW

Example: May kilos o bagay bang nagpapakita ng kahulugan?
Result: Anong naging bunga ng katangian o kilos?

Takpan muna ang target word

Basahin ang pangungusap na para bang may patlang at hulaan ang kinakailangang ideya.

Palawakin hanggang buong talata

Kung kulang ang isang pangungusap, gamitin ang sanhi, halimbawa, at resulta sa paligid.

Subukan ang kapalit

Ipasok ang napiling kahulugan at tingnan kung nananatiling lohikal ang sipi.

Iwasan ang pamilyar ngunit maling kahulugan

Maaaring tunay na kahulugan ng salita ang distractor ngunit hindi iyon ang gamit sa kontekstong ito.

DO IT FAST

Gamitin ang D-K-H-S

D — Definition: May tuwirang paliwanag ba?
K — Kontrast: Ano ang kabaligtaran o kwalipikasyon?
H — Halimbawa: Anong kilos ang nagpapakita ng salita?
S — Substitution: Aling kapalit ang nananatiling lohikal?

Why it works

Pinipigilan nitong pumili ka batay sa tunog o memorya lamang at inuugnay ang sagot sa ebidensiya ng teksto.

WORKED EXAMPLES

Five forms you should recognize

1. Tuwirang depinisyon

Ang tutuldok ay maaaring sundan ng malinaw na paliwanag.

2. Kontrast

Ang “hindi permanente” ay tumutulong tukuyin ang pansamantala.

3. Sanhi at resulta

Kung dinagdagan ng poste upang hindi bumagsak, ipinakikita nito ang sinuhayan.

4. Tono

Kilos, bilis ng pagsasalita, at reaksiyon ng tagapakinig ay nagpapalinaw sa matiim.

5. Hangganan

Ang bahagya ay maaaring mangahulugang may nakita ngunit hindi kumpleto.

COMMON TRAPS

Check before you commit

  • Pagpili sa salitang magkatunog
  • Paggamit ng unang kahulugang naalala kahit hindi tugma
  • Pagbasa lamang ng target sentence
  • Pagkalito sa “bahagya” at “wala”
  • Pagbalewala sa hindi o ngunit
  • Pagpili sa sobrang malawak o sobrang tiyak na kahulugan

QUICK REVIEW

The passage is your temporary dictionary

In Reading Comprehension, a vocabulary question does not mainly ask, “Have you memorized this word?” It asks, “Can you use the surrounding sentences to determine what this word must mean here?” A word can also change meaning by context, so always test the meaning inside the sentence.

THE CORE MOVE
Replace the target word with your proposed meaning. The sentence’s logic, tone, and grammar should remain intact.

Definition or restatement

A dash, comma, parenthesis, or following sentence may define the word directly.

Contrast

Words such as unlike, but, although, rather than, and however reveal an opposite or shift.

Example or behavior

Concrete examples show what the word includes; a character’s actions reveal what an adjective means.

Cause, effect, and tone

What happens because of the condition—and the writer’s attitude—can narrow the meaning.

DO IT FAST

Use CLUE → GUESS → REPLACE → VERIFY

Excerpt: “The evidence is tentative. The pattern appears twice, but a larger study is still needed.”

CLUE: More evidence is needed. GUESS: not final. REPLACE: “The evidence is not final.” VERIFY: This preserves the logic.

Do not begin with the choices. Form a rough meaning first, then select the option that matches it.

Why it works

It forces you to read relationships in the excerpt before attractive distractors influence your interpretation.

WORKED EXAMPLES

Five forms you should recognize

1. Definition clue

The town imposed a curfew—a rule requiring residents to remain indoors after a stated hour—during the emergency. The phrase after the dash supplies the meaning directly.

2. Contrast clue

Unlike the transient stalls removed each evening, the stone shops had stood there for decades. The opposite of long-lasting is temporary or short-lived.

3. Behavior clue

The manager was meticulous: she checked every total twice and compared each receipt with the log.Her precise actions reveal careful attention to detail.

4. Cause-and-effect clue

The slope was unstable; after light rain, stones began sliding onto the road. The effect shows that the slope is not secure.

5. Tone and qualification

The proposal is ostensibly about safety, yet most of its rules concern advertising. The skeptical contrast suggests “apparently or supposedly,” not necessarily truly.

COMMON TRAPS

Check before you commit

  • Choosing a familiar meaning that does not fit this sentence
  • Using only the target sentence when the next sentence supplies the decisive clue
  • Mistaking an example of the word for its complete definition
  • Ignoring positive, negative, or skeptical tone
  • Selecting a word with the right general topic but wrong logical role
  • Letting one unknown word prevent you from using all the known clues

QUICK ANSWERS

Vocabulary in Context FAQ

Should I memorize vocabulary lists?

They help, but context questions still require you to verify meaning inside the passage.

What if I do not know the target word at all?

Cover it, summarize what the sentence says, and infer the kind of meaning required before reading the options.

Can context determine an exact dictionary definition?

Often it only narrows the meaning enough to choose the best option. That is sufficient.
