A shape sequence has an order, not merely a collection

Name each shape before searching for a rule. Then test whether the sequence repeats, gains or loses sides, works in pairs, or contains two alternating chains.

Cycle: circle → square → triangle → circle
Side count: triangle → square → pentagon → hexagon
Repeated pairs: circle, circle, square, square
Two chains: inspect positions 1-3-5 separately from 2-4-6

Use NAME → COUNT → SPLIT → TEST

  1. NAME: Translate the figures into a short list of shape names.
  2. COUNT: For polygons, write the number of sides: 3, 4, 5, 6.
  3. SPLIT: If one rule fails, compare odd positions and even positions separately.
  4. TEST: Make sure the rule explains every frame, not only the final pair.
Do not treat a diamond as a new four-sided family automatically. It may simply be a rotated square; rotation is addressed in the next reviewer.

  1. Triangle has three sides.
  2. Square has four sides.
  3. Pentagon has five sides.
  4. The rule adds one side each time.

Should a circle count as a zero-sided polygon?

Not unless the item clearly establishes that rule. Treat a circle as its own shape in ordinary cycles.

When should I split odd and even positions?

Use two chains when consecutive frames seem inconsistent but positions 1-3-5 and 2-4-6 each form a simple pattern.

Can a sequence repeat shapes in pairs?

Yes. Look for groupings such as A, A, B, B, C, C before assuming each frame changes.

What if two rules fit the last frames?

Test both rules against the entire sequence. The intended rule should explain every transition economically.

Does orientation matter here?

Only when it is necessary to distinguish shapes. Rotation and reflection receive focused treatment in the next reviewer.
