Read the structure before reading the story
A graph turns data into a visual pattern, but its meaning still depends on labels, units, scale, and the kind of graph used. UPCAT-style questions may ask for a value, comparison, trend, rate, proportion, or the safest conclusion.
Title: What is measured?
Axes and labels: Which variables and categories?
Units: Count, percent, pesos, time, or index?
Scale: Where does it begin and how large are the intervals?
Claim: Does the graph show association, change, or actual causation?
Values before impressions
Read labels and scale instead of judging bar or line shape alone.
Percent is not count
A smaller group can have a higher rate but fewer actual members.
Trend is not guarantee
A graph can support a pattern without proving the next value or its cause.
Watch the baseline
A truncated axis can exaggerate a small difference.

This forces you to decode the graph before calculating or accepting a visual impression.
Five forms you should recognize
Compare lengths only after checking the scale and values.
Read direction, turning points, and interval rates.
Convert a sector percentage into a part of the stated whole.
Describe association without automatically claiming causation.
Check whether the axis starts at zero or truncates the range.
Check before you commit
- Ignoring units or axis labels
- Confusing percentage change with percentage-point change
- Assuming correlation proves cause
- Using a voluntary sample to describe an entire population
- Projecting an exact future value from a short trend
- Comparing percentages without considering group sizes

Must every bar graph start at zero?
For honest magnitude comparisons, bar charts generally should; a truncated baseline can exaggerate differences.
What is an outlier?
A point noticeably distant from the overall pattern. It may be important, but it should be investigated rather than automatically deleted.
Can a graph prove causation?
Usually not by itself. It may show association or change, while causation requires stronger design and evidence.
