Articles signal sound and reference
A/an introduces one nonspecific countable item. The points to something identifiable, unique, or already mentioned. Zero article often marks general plural or uncountable ideas and conventional expressions.
Countability: Is the noun singular countable?
Reference: Is it new, general, or identifiable?
Sound: Does the next word begin with a vowel sound?
Convention: Is it a meal, language, institution, place name, or fixed phrase?
Use sound for a/an
An hour but a university; an MRI but a UNESCO event.
Use the for identifiable reference
Earlier mention, a defining phrase, only, ordinals, and superlatives often signal the.
Use zero for general meaning
Plural and uncountable nouns commonly take no article when speaking generally.

Is a/an based on spelling?
No. It is based on the sound immediately after the article.
Why is it “go to school” but “visit the school”?
The first means participating in the institution’s normal purpose; the second refers to a specific place.
Does every place name take the?
No. Oceans, rivers, plural countries, and ranges often do; most cities, streets, mountains, and singular countries do not.
