Convert only after you identify the unit

Length: mm, cm, m, km
Mass: mg, g, kg
Capacity: mL, L
Time: seconds, minutes, hours
Area: cm², m²
Volume: cm³, m³
Important: Area and volume conversions are not the same as length conversions. Squared units and cubic units change faster.
CONVERSION GUIDE

Use the relationship, not memorized guessing

Length

1 km=1,000 m
1 m=100 cm
1 cm=10 mm

Mass

1 kg=1,000 g
1 g=1,000 mg

Capacity

1 L=1,000 mL

Time

1 hr=60 min
1 min=60 sec

Why area is different

Since 1 m = 100 cm:

1 m² = 100 cm × 100 cm = 10,000 cm²

Why volume is different

Since 1 m = 100 cm:

1 m³ = 100 × 100 × 100 = 1,000,000 cm³
WORKED EXAMPLES

Seven patterns you should recognize

1. Meters to centimeters

3.6 m × 100 = 360 cm

2. Meters to kilometers

2,500 m ÷ 1,000 = 2.5 km

3. Kilograms to grams

4.2 kg × 1,000 = 4,200 g

4. Liters to milliliters

1.75 L × 1,000 = 1,750 mL

5. Hours to minutes

2.5 hr × 60 = 150 min

6. Square meters to square centimeters

2 m² × 10,000 = 20,000 cm²

7. Elapsed time

Start: 2:35 PM. End: 4:10 PM.

1 hour 35 minutes

Which way should the number move?

Convert 4.8 km to meters.

  1. 1 km = 1,000 m.
  2. Kilometers are larger units than meters.
  3. Going to the smaller unit means the number gets larger.
  4. 4.8 × 1,000 = 4,800.
4,800 m
COMMON TRAPS

Watch out for these

Moving the decimal without knowing why.
Use the unit relationship first.
Treating hours like base 100.
Time uses 60 minutes per hour, not 100.
Using 100 for m² to cm².
It is 10,000 because both dimensions are converted.
Forgetting the unit in the answer.
A number without a unit may not fully answer the question.

Know what the question is measuring

Perimeter is the distance around a shape.

Area is the amount of space inside a flat shape.

Rectangle:
Perimeter = 2L + 2W
Area = L × W
DO IT FAST

Use IDENTIFY → FORMULA → UNIT

  1. IDENTIFY: Is the problem asking for perimeter, area, angle, or measurement?
  2. FORMULA: Use only the formula you need.
  3. UNIT: Check cm vs cm², m vs m², minutes vs hours, and so on.
  4. REASON: Ask whether your answer is the right size.
WORKED EXAMPLES

Six patterns you should recognize

1. Rectangle perimeter

Length 8 cm, width 5 cm.

2(8) + 2(5) = 26 cm
26 cm

2. Rectangle area

Length 9 m, width 4 m.

9 × 4 = 36 m²
36 m²

3. Triangle area

Base 10 cm, height 6 cm.

1/2 × 10 × 6 = 30 cm²
30 cm²

4. Angle fact

Angles on a straight line add to 180°. If one angle is 125°, the other is:

180 − 125 = 55°
55°

5. Unit conversion

3.5 m = ? cm

3.5 × 100 = 350 cm
350 cm

6. Time conversion

2.5 hours = ? minutes

2.5 × 60 = 150 minutes
150 minutes

Perimeter or area?

A rectangular garden is 12 m long and 7 m wide. How much fencing is needed to go around it?

  1. Fencing goes around the garden.
  2. So we need perimeter.
  3. 2(12)+2(7)=24+14.
38 m
COMMON TRAPS

Watch out for these

Using area when the question asks “around.”
Around means perimeter.
Forgetting square units.
Area uses cm², m², and so on.
Using a slanted side as triangle height.
The height must be perpendicular to the base.
Converting units in the wrong direction.
1 m = 100 cm, so meters to centimeters gets larger.
