Math - Kinds of Fractions

Here are the different kinds of fractions:

Proper Fractions
            These are fractions whose numerators are smaller than their denominators. The value of a proper fraction is always less than 1.

Examples:       1 ,  4  , 6  ,  2
                        3    5    8    10


Improper Fractions
            These are fractions whose numerators are equal to or greater than their denominators. The value of an improper fraction is either equal to or greater than 1.

Examples:       7 ,  5  , 9  , 13
                       3    5    8    10


Mixed Numbers
            These fractions are combinations of a whole number and a proper fraction.

Examples:     1  1 ,     6  8  ,   10  4
                          4          10           5


Similar Fractions / Like Fractions
            These are fractions with the same denominators.

Examples:     1 , 3 , 4                        7 ,  12,  13
                      5   5   5                      14    14   14    


Dissimilar Fractions / Unlike Fractions                      
            These are fractions with different denominators.

Examples:     1 , 3 , 4                        7 ,  12,  13
                      5   8   9                      14    12   17


Related Fractions
            These are fractions with related denominators. They could be multiples of the same number.

Examples:     1 and 3           4  and   6
                      2        4           8          24


Unit Fractions
            These are fractions with 1 as the numerator. They are called unit fractions because they represent 1 part of the whole.

Example:       1 ,  1  ,  1  ,      
                      3    5    80   110
